New striker is quick to raise the Hatters’ roof

NEW striker Lloyd Owusu enjoyed a whirlwind start to his Town career with a debut goal against York City on Tuesday night, writes Mike Simmonds.

The 34-year-old’s signing was only announced on Tuesday afternoon, but he was thrust straight into the starting line-up.

He only had to wait 36 minutes to showcase his raise the roof celebration too, heading home Andy Drury’s corner.

Owusu said: “Everything happened so quickly, I only met the club on Monday as I had found out on Sunday that they were interested in talking to me.

“I was playing a game for Gillingham and thought Luton were going to come and have a look at me.

“But I met the club and manager and they said, this is what we believe you can do to the team and if you are interested, we’d like to have you. Luckily I signed on the dotted line and happy days.

“The gaffer told me, ‘if I told you, you were going to play tomorrow, what would you say?’ I said ‘gaffer, I haven’t played since February last year, but I’ll give you my all’.”

Hatters boss Richard Money said: “We met him on Monday and were looking for someone of his type.

“We thought he showed his value to the team and when you have someone as experienced as him, and more of a man than what we have, he’s able to step straight in and played for us as though he’s been playing for us all season.

“It was a fantastic delivery (from Drury), Beckhamesque, and I would suggest a header that anyone in the Premier League would have been proud of.”

Skipper George Pilkington added: “Lloyd has got the fans on his side straightaway.

“It was a great header and he gives you another dimension to the forwards we’ve got at the club.”
