Parma set to name their stars

They appear likely to name the likes of Argentinian striker Hernan Crespo in their squad, alongside all their new summer signings.

Town manager Gary Brabin said: “I’ve heard they are going to bring a strong side and have made five signings and are going to name a really strong side.”

Cardiff City are set to host Parma on Saturday, while they also travel to Premier League sides Norwich City and West Brom as part of their British tour.

Luton travel to Evo-Stik Southern League Premier side Cambridge City beforehand on Saturday, but Brabin admitted it was the Italians his players were really champing at the bit to face.

He said: “Before that we’ve got a game against Cambridge.

“It’s all part of our preparation. It’s a high profile game and I’m sure everyone will want to play in that.

“We won’t be taking it lightly or disrespecting the opposition.

“I think the lads will all be itching to play in that game.”

Trialist strikers Nathan Elder and Leon McKenzie look set to be given another opportunity to impress again in Cambridge.

On 26-year-old 6ft 2ins former Shrewsbury Town striker Elder, Brabin said: “We are having a look at him. He is looking to get himself fit but he has struggled with injuries the last 12 months.”

And on 33-year-old former £1million man McKenzie, Brabin continued: “We will have another look at him Saturday. He is experienced and is a clever player and still has the hunger and desire.”

But with a number of players still on the sidelines, including the likes of George Pilkington, Shane Blackett, Freddie Murray and Charlie Henry, Brabin believes he is still some way from putting out his first-choice team.

He said: “I think we are still a little bit away from naming our strongest side and players are still behind in training with little injuries from last season.

“It’s important we are ready for the start of the season.”

New Wales U21 international Jake Howells also believes things are going well despite Wednesday night’s 3-2 home defeat to Azerbaijan Premier League side Gabala.

He added: “I think we are doing really well, everyone is gelling together.

“Gabala aren’t a bad team and I think we are doing well.”

Town then entertain Premier League QPR on Friday night before travelling to Corby to face them at their new ground on the Saturday.
