Hatters defender Dan Potts was left to rue his missed opportunity against Gillingham in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Tuesday night.

With time running out and Hatters trailing 2-1, the full back was found by Ryan Hall’s flick completely unmarked in the area, but could only volley disappointingly wide of the mark.

“It just dropped so quick and looking back on it, I had a bit more time than I thought, I could have taken a touch.”

The 21-year-old, who is yet to score in his professional career, said: “I think I should have scored at the end and taken it to pens.

“I half didn’t expect Hally to give me the ball from where he was, credit to him because he found me.

“It just dropped so quick and looking back on it, I had a bit more time than I thought, I could have taken a touch.

“I think it it wasn’t raining, wasn’t as slippy, I might have connected a bit better, but it’s one of them.

“It was enjoyable to get in there, almost score, but I’m sure I’ll be on the training pitch practicing my volleys.”

Potts was only making his second start for the Hatters since joining in the summer from West Ham United after being sidelined by a hamstring injury recently.

He was delighted to be involved with the first team once more, continuing: “It was just enjoyable to get out there, I didn’t feel unfit, I felt fit enough.

“I think we got a bit ragged second half and knew they would come on to us.

“It’s been frustrating, the injury came at a bad time and I’ve been feeling my way back into training and match fitness.

“I had a couple of reserve team games, but it was nice to get that first team game. You can’t match that in training, so it was a good work out.

“The disappointment was going out, but from the gaffer’s point of view and a personal point of view, there were positives to take.

“Mags (Magnus Okuonghae) has been out for a while, OB’s (Mark O’Brien) had little niggles, Doyley’s (Nathan Doyle) been out, I’ve myself been out injured.

“It seems like the whole team has come together now and it’s a good strong squad.

“The disappointment was going out as it would have been nice to get a clean sheet, but that’s football.

“Gillingham are flying in their league, but we definitely held our own.”
