PREVIEW: Mansfield Town v Luton Town

This season hasn’t gone exactly to plan for Mansfield so far, writes Mike Simmonds.

Touted by many as genuine title contenders before the campaign began, they have struggled badly for consistency which has crippled their attempts to launch a genuine assault at the top of the table.

Back to back defeats in their opening games, saw them concede eight goals in the process, before the Stags looked like they had got back on track with five wins from the next seven games.

Since then though, they have won four just out of 11 matches, with five draws, and only just squeezed through in the FA Cup first round at Slough on Tuesday night, beating their Evo-Stik Southern League Division One Central opponents on penalties.

Mansfield’s current position of 10th has been built on their home form with six wins from nine games, taking 20 from a possible 27 points as apart from the opening day 4-3 defeat to Newport, they have yet to be beaten in front of their own supporters too.

Boss Paul Cox tried to rebuild his whole side during the summer, making a raft of new signings with no less than 14 new players joining.

These included the likes of George Pilkington and Godfrey Poku from Luton, Nick Wright (Kidderminster), John Dempster (Crawley) and Wrexham’s duo of Jake Speight and Jamie Tolley.

Much of the new vaunted line up haven’t come off for Cox though, with Pilkington, Tolley and Luke Jones barely featuring so far.

It appears Cox has finally settled on a starting line-up, as he his kept the same team for the past three games, but is now forced into a chance for the Hatters clash after captain Dempster was sent off in extra-time for violent conduct against Slough in midweek.

The former Kettering played had forged a solid defensive partnership with Exodus Geohaghon of late, conceding just two goals in four matches, so his absence is something of a frustration to the boss, who said: “I thought the centre back pairing was really coming together and I have kept the same side for the third game running because it was developing.

“We will be forced into a change, which is not ideal, but it is a chance for somebody to step forward and stake a claim for a regular place.”

Striker Matt Green has yet to hit the heights of last season which saw him finish as one of the top scorers in the Conference, with almost 30 league goals to his name.

Four in his first six games looked like he would carry on his prolific ways, but he hasn’t scored since September 4, a run spanning seven games.

Just two wins in their last eight Conference matches have seen frustrations creep in with the fans this season too, with the Stags’ players receiving abuse after a number of home games.

Captain and assistant manager Adam Murray added: “We have gone into a siege mentality and have to as the abuse has got personal.

“We were here last season and I’m past worrying about it. I’m focused on playing football and working for the boys out there who care.

“There is a lot of things at the club behind the scenes, a lot of politics where people are trying to stir up trouble and it’s turning on the players now.”

Mansfield are definitely without John Dempster after his red card, with John Thompson more than likely to replace him.

He went on loan to Mansfield in September 2010, making the move permanent in January and has now made almost 100 appearances, recently signing a new one-year deal as player assistant manager.
