PREVIEW: Town out to continue unbeaten Aggborough run

HATTERS venture to a ground they have never lost at this weekend when they visit Aggborough, home of Kidderminster Harriers, writes Mike Simmonds.

Town have only played there three times mind you, the first back in 2001-02 when Matthew Taylor, Steve Howard and a Matthew Spring double saw the visitors to a 4-1 win.

In the Conference, Town won 2-1 in their first season, while they were involved in a thrilling 3-3 draw last year.

Kidderminster have started the campaign in fine form, sitting in the play-off spots, losing just once at home so far, that an opening day defeat to Gateshead.

They are currently on a three-match unbeaten run too, picking up wins at Kettering and Mansfield, while being held at home by Grimsby.

Harriers manager Steve Burr lost two major players over the summer with leading scorer Chris McPhee joining Torquay United, while Keith Briggs was signed by Fleetwood Town for £5,000.

The boss strengthened wisely though, bringing in experience in the form of 35-year-old striker Steve Guinan and Wrexham defender Marc Williams, while forward Tommy Wright, who once cost Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen £75,000, is the latest to agree terms, albeit on a short term deal

George Pilkington, Shane Blackett and Charlie Henry all played in the St Neots match, but Saturday comes too soon, while Alex Lawless continues to recuperate from his broken hand. Freddie Murray and Dan Gleeson remained on the injured list.

Kettering will be boosted by the availability of striker Steve Guinan and midfielder Kyle Storer after the pair served suspensions, while Jack Byrne undergoes a fitness test after a virus.

In charge: Steve Burr – Scottish striker who played for Stafford Rangers, Macclesfield and other non-league sides before becoming Nuneaton Borough manager in 2001.

Also been in charge of Hucknall Town, Northwich Victoria and Stalybridge Celtic before becoming Harriers boss in January 2010. Finished sixth last season, six points away from the play-offs, but the club did suffer a five point deductions after a breach of financial regulations.

“With all the fans they are going to bring, Luton are going to add to the great atmosphere we already have, and I know the players will really respond to that.

“We go into the game one place ahead of them so we can build a bit of a gap if we win.

“Because of who they are, everyone expects them to run away with the league but they are in a good position.

“Luton are a fantastic club. I worked with Dave Moss, who was a legend at Luton, for a number of years at Northwich and Stalybridge.

“I look back and remember watching Luton when he was playing, along with Brian Horton and people like that.

“They’re a big club and when you see the crowds they pull in at home and see the support they take away, it makes for a great game, a big occasion and a fantastic atmosphere.

“We’re really looking forward to Saturday, and to be in a position where we’re above them in the table and can open up a gap between us by beating them - that’s a fantastic achievement for us.”

One to watch: Nick Wright – striker who begun his career at Birmingham City before loan spells at Tamworth, Bristol City and Northampton.
