Sluga wants Town to carry on improving in the Championship

Town keeper Simon Sluga has set his sights on improving even more with the Hatters next season.

The 28-year-old Croatian international has been in superb form this term, keeping 13 clean sheets from his 41 appearances, seven more than he managed last term.

It has led to the Hatters finishing in the top half of the Championship and with a points tally of 62, their highest in the second tier since the 1981-82 campaign.

Sluga, who is the club’s record ever signing, now wants to push on again, telling the club's official website: “I would like to make something nice with the club, to improve even more.

“I don’t think about goals, my goals are that every day to improve and in every game to be better and then see what the life is going to give you.

“We will see, but at the moment it is just to improve with Luton Town and to be in a better position than we are going to end this year.”

With Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirming this week that 10,000 spectators will be allowed at outdoor sports venues from May 17, it means that when Town begin their 2021-22 season, it will be in front of a sell-out Kenilworth Road once more.

Sluga cannot wait to play in front of Town’s supporters once more as on their absence, he continued: “It’s not just for me, it’s for everyone, we missed them so much.

“We miss the crowd and I think it was a very, very good connection for all of us with them last season.

“I’m very looking forward now for the start of the next season and I hope that the rest of our lives we’re going to go back where we were before and everything will be a little bit more normal, than it is at the moment.”

This year has been Sluga’s first full season under boss Nathan Jones too, the manager returning with nine games of the previous campaign to go, masterminding Hatters to Championship survival on the final day.

He has been impressed with what he has seen too, saying: “I found him a very, very good manager, very good fella, very intensive person.

“You know exactly what he wants from you when you’re on the pitch and I like that because I like when everyone knows what they’re doing.

“When you’re doing the basics right, you can have a good point from where to start.”

Sluga also praised the goalkeeping union at Kenilworth Road which have pushed him to the heights he has managed this season.

He added: “We always have a special relationship.

“When you come into the new club from the very first moment, it's like you’re here for each other, so we always have this relationship that is starting from the very beginning.

“Even Stechy (Marek Stech) when he was here, Sheasy (James Shea), Harry (Isted), the young lads, very good persons, very good fellas.

“They’re big workers, they like to work, they like to improve.

"When I had last season the tough start, Sheasy after that was the best player on the pitch in the moments he was playing.

“This year when I was injured he kept three clean sheets in seven games, so very, very good.

"We are pushing each other forward and supporting each other, so it’s a really nice situation to be in."
