The Hatters have an average gate of 8,625 on their return to League Two and another big crowd is expected when in-form Newport County visit on Saturday.

Smith said: “The fans are a real 12th man and I urge them to keep getting behind us as it does make such a difference when we’ve got those fans behind us.

“Hopefully they can keep backing us as they are at the moment.

“We know every game is tough in this league, whoever comes here whether it be bottom or to and Saturday is no different.

“We’ll do everything we can for the win. The preparation starts now for that, we’ll all work hard and all focus hard on getting the result on Saturday which we need.”

Hatters can go into the game with renewed confidence after putting the 3-0 defeat against Morecambe behind them the previous weekend immediately with an FA Cup triumph over Bury on Tuesday night.

Smith said: “The lads really worked hard and I think we thoroughly deserved to go through.

“Everyone put a right shift in and gave absolutely everything.

“Even the lads that came on, Ross Lafayette, Matt Robinson and Jake Howells gave everything and that’s what was pushing the lads forward.

“We started the game really well, started the second half really well too. It was a really determined performance and that’s what you need in the cup.”

The victory saw Luton earn a tie at Cambridge in the next stage as Smith continued: “It will be a good game, League Two against a League Two side. We’ll fancy our chances and when it comes around, we’ll be prepared for that.”
