The popular 28-year-old, who won a host of prizes at the club’s recent end of season awards night, is out of contract at Kenilworth Road this summer.

However, after making his 100th appearance during the 2-0 win over Stevenage on Saturday that saw Luton finish in eighth place, Smith tweeted afterwards: “Very proud to play my 100th game for Luton Town today. Gutted we didn’t make playoffs but will come back stronger and fitter next season!!!”

Boss John Still confirmed to the News/Gazette last week a new deal was on the table and said on Saturday: “I don’t believe there’s a problem with Jonathan Smith, I think that will happen.”

On the remaining members of the squad who are now free agents, including the likes of Shaun Whalley, Fraser Franks and Jim Stevenson, Still added: “This week will be a week where players will learn or come up with decisions that we’ve decided on.

“There’ll be players that we won’t re-sign and probably be players that we put on the transfer list, but that happens at every football club.

“We wanted to get this week out of the way, because we can’t be 100 per cent sure on what’s going to happen, so everything will be sorted this coming week.”
