The combative 27-year-old had his first 90 minutes since December 21, 2013 in the 5-0 Final Third Development League win over Bournemouth on Tuesday afternoon.

Speaking exclusively to the News/Gazette, Smith, who suffered a double leg break against Barnet on Boxing Day, said: “I think I needed the game to get the fitness levels back up.

“I’m quite naturally fit, but it’s good to get 90 minutes in the legs. The leg’s fine, it’s 100 per cent fine, there’s no problem with it.

“I don’t think they just wanted to throw me in the deep end after missing so much. So he (John Still) wanted to go step by step, he’s good like that, looking after me.

“But I’ve told the gaffer whenever he’s ready to pick me, I’ll be there, giving 100 per cent, so it’s down to him now really.”

Second-placed Cheltenham are the visitors to Kenilworth Road this weekend, and despite a disappointing start that has seen Luton pick up just five points, Smith is still looking for another season of success.
