Smith knows hard work is key for Hatters

The 28-year-old has seen his side take a mere five points from a possible 21 so far this season, after yet another last-gasp defeat at Notts County, with the Magpies becoming the fourth team to beat Luton in stoppage time.

Smith said: “It’s really disappointing. We’ve got to at least take a draw out of that and be disappointed with a draw, not come away losing a goal late.

“We’ve just got to keep working hard though like the gaffer says. I know personally I can improve, my all-round game can improve, so I will keep working as hard as I can for the team, as I think will all the lads.”

Smith was on target for the second time this campaign, although unlike his previous deflected effort against Accrington, he was fully aware if his intentions this time, striking into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

The midfielder knew it counted for little once Liam Noble crashed in the winner, continuing: “It was the perfect lay off from Ryan Hall and on a nice pitch, was just there to be hit.

“Fortunately I caught it right and found the corner. At the time I was happy, but I’d have taken not scoring and we get something out of the game.”

One positive that Smith was taking from the match was the way in which his side looked by far the better the longer the game went on.

He added: “We were disappointed to be 1-0 down, but we had confidence we’d be good enough to come back.

“We came on strong second half at Cambridge last week, so I had a feeling we’d come on strong again and we did.”
