Stevenson relieved to celebrate his first Town goal

The 22-year-old thought he had opened his account for the Hatters in the recent 1-0 win over Cheltenham, before being denied by a desperately late linesman’s flag.

This time there was no such issue as he reacted quickest to tap home after Ricky Miller’s free kick had been parried.

Stevenson said: “If you noticed, I back-pedalled when I was celebrating just to have him (linesman) in my eye-line in case it (the flag) went up.

“But I knew I wasn’t this time as I made sure I wasn’t offside this time.

“I haven’t had a shot since the disallowed one, so it was nice to get one and an important goal as well.”

On the strike, boss John Still added: “It dropped in the six yard box, but you’ve got to be in there. If you’ve got a strike at goal, it’s amazing how many goals come not direct from a free kick, but the regain from it.”

Getting on the scoresheet had been an important facet for Stevenson prior to joining Town and he is well aware how important it is for him to become a more regular marksman once more.
