Still: Angol wouldn’t be at Posh if it wasn’t for me

The 21-year-old refused to sign the contract offered to him by Town after a prolific spell at Boreham Wood in the Conference, where he scored 25 goals, preferring to look elsewhere for employment.

After trying his luck at a number of Premier League clubs without success, Angol returned to Luton, where Still got in contact with Peterborough director of football Barry Fry to thrash out a deal.

The forward has now notched seven goals in 14 league games for his new side as Still said: “He came in, he didn’t have a club, we took him, asked him a question, ‘you can stay and compete or go and get definite first team football at Boreham Wood.’ So he said, ‘yeah, I’ll do that.’

“We then offered him a new deal on what he’d done, he thought he should get more money, too much more money, which we and the club didn’t think was right.

“The agent said ‘we won’t sign, we’ll go somewhere else’. Well, fine, I know he trained at West Ham, (Crystal) Palace and Wolves, no-one took him.

“I didn’t want him, because once he didn’t want to be here, I didn’t want him. I rang Barry Fry, I said ‘you know me, with forwards, this boy can score.

“‘He’s not the article yet, but I think he’s worth taking the chance, but I don’t really want to mess about with a tribunal, I’m just letting you know that I don’t really want him, so if you want to make some enquiries yourself’.

“They did, they came back and otherwise he would have had nothing, as he never had anything.

“But he wasn’t going to be for me and he’s gone there and done all right, but I thought he’d do all right as I think he’s all right, but I don’t think he conducted himself, for me, in the right way.

“It’s really funny, he may not think so, I’m sure Barry will tell you, without me, he wouldn’t have a club to go to as he didn’t have a club and if it wasn’t for my phone call, he wouldn’t have a club, so that’s how that one went.”

On whether he has talked to Angol since the deal, Still said: “No. But he hasn’t spoken to me either.”

Meanwhile, Hatters keeper Mark Tyler saw enough of Angol in training last year to know he will be a threat on Sunday, adding: “Technically he’s a very good player and did really well at Boreham Wood last year.

“The club made him an offer and he refused it, which was bit gutting, but he’s doing well at the moment.

“He’s scoring a few goals and hopefully we’ll do our homework and see what their strengths and weaknesses are and we’ll try and combat that.”
