Still bemoans Hatters’ lack of a finishing touch

Town had their chances, most notably through Alex Lacey and Mark Cullen, while Luke Rooney came close in the second period, denied by a fantastic Michael Ingham save.

But Still felt the opportunities shouldn’t have gone begging as he said: “It was an outstanding performance, but there was one disappointment, too many chances not taken, from various people.

“We got our tactics spot on, went for sharp players around their back four, but everyone’s got to do their job.

“Whether that’s defending at the back, winning the ball and passing in midfield, crossing the ball or finishing off.

“Too many people didn’t take a chance to score, but I can’t look at any player and say they’ve not played well.

“It doesn’t mean centre forwards have got to score, but people in those areas have got to find the net and they didn’t.

“It was a good performance but we’ve got really hone up on that.”

Unlike previous away games though, Hatters always looked genuine threat going forward, which Still was happy with.

He continued: “We keep taking the right steps forward and if I look at the attacking play, it was absolutely first class, I thought Mark Cullen was brilliant, I really did.

“Pelly’s (Ruddock Mpanzu) surging runs, he’s back to what he was now, Smudger (Jonathan Smith) does what he does, thought for long periods.

“I was waiting for a goal and second half, I said they’ve got to come out stronger and they may have, but in flashes.

“We controlled the ball so well, I was really, really pleased with how we’ve played, but we’ve got to win some more games.

Still also felt that it was unfortunate his adventurous approach at Bootham Crescent wasn’t rewarded, as he said: “I said at half time that we go to win.

“Away from home, we could have sat our two midfielders deeper and tell Pelly not to make those runs, just protect the back four, but I don’t want to get points, I want to win.

“That’s we did last year, and we had more than enough opportunities to win. If they score a goal, that’s a bit unfortunate, but we should have got three or four I’ve no doubt about that.

“It usually takes my teams, six, seven games to get where I think we should be in terms of the football side of it and we’re there, absolutely, don’t care who we play, where we play, we’re there, but we have to finish the opportunities as well.”

The boss was left to question why his side weren’t awarded a first half penalty when the sliding John McCombe appeared to handle in the box.

He added: “I’m 100 per cent sure of a penalty for handball.

“We’re all on the side and to be fair on their side, they they looked over at us and thought ‘oh my god.’

“He slipped over and couldn’t help that, but his hand came out and knocked the ball away.

“But we didn’t get it so it’s no good me going on about it, we should have won the game without that.”
