Still: Changes will be made for Crawley tie

The likes of Jonathan Smith, Nathan Doyle and Paul Benson are all expected to be retained from Saturday’s win over Stevenage, but there should be appearances for Luke Guttridge, Jake Howells and Alex Lawless too.

Still said: “We will make some changes, I think quite a few teams will, but there will be changes made looking at a bigger picture for us.

“Players that we think need to have a bit of game time, players coming back from injury, most notable really, Jonathan Smith and Doyley, can do with some more game time as opposed to training. We might as well play them two, so they’ll play.

“We’re not flush with defenders, so the back four will remain the same, and then around that we have other people who just need the games.

“Paul Benson’s been out, so he needs to play. Gutts, he needs to play, so when you look at those players, they’re good players.

“We’ve tried to be really careful with Gutts as his foot still does get sore. I do try so hard as I can to pick games for him at the moment, because if we’ve got 36 games left, I want him available for 36.

“Will he play 36? No he won’t, but if he plays 20-25, I want him to be fully fit because he’s a very, very good player for us.

“He didn’t play Saturday so he’ll be okay. Hopefully we can look at Alex Lawless and he can get some game time, look at Alex Wall, Charlie Walker, Howellsy’s been around it too, they’re people who are all in and around contention.”

Neither Curtley Williams or Paul Connolly are expected to be fit, but Shaun Whalley may get another run out as Still continued: “It was really tough on Shaun as we threw him in (against Oxford) as wanted the team to win and the balance to be right, even though we knew he was a long way from being fit.

“But we have a game this afternoon amongst ourselves and some of those people that need that, will get some of that.

“It won’t stop him (Whalley) being involved tomorrow, he’ll very much be in and around that.”

Still also confirmed he could well give Elliot Justham his first action of the season as he said: “I will look at the goalkeeper situation. He (Justham) has done well, and Tyles (Mark Tyler) has done very, very well, so it’s good competition at the moment.

“Maybe it’s Elliot’s chance to go between the sticks tomorrow.”

Whatever side Still does send out their against their League One opponents though, it’s one he believes can reach the next stage.

The boss added: “As I always say, I wouldn’t pick a team that I didn’t think could win the game, so we’ll try and be as positive as we can and we’ll respect the competition.

“Even with the FA Trophy last year, when people say it doesn’t matter if we don’t win and it didn’t matter in the scheme of things, but you’ve got to try and win it, that’s the job.

“The team that I put out beat the holders Wrexham, took Cambridge, the eventual winners to two games, when they were on paper a lot stronger.

“So I put a team out that I felt could win that Trophy and I’ll do the same in this competition as I will in the FA Cup, try and win.”
