Still ‘chuffed’ with formation but it might be a one-off

With three centre halves on display, plus Scott Griffiths and Paul Connolly as wingbacks, Hatters held their own until late in the game when the highly rated Michael Smith scored twice.

However, despite being impressed with the tactics, Still didn’t think it would be a regular fixture for his side.

He said: “We played a new system, it’s not one that we’ll play but it’s one that we might need to play.

“I think we’ll come up against some teams here in particular that will play narrow.

“So if that happens then we have to have something else in our locker.

“I’ve looked at it and I was absolutely delighted with it. The defensive side of it doesn’t need a lot of work on it, because we’ve picked that up quite well.

“The pass and move bit was, in flashes, we played against a good side, so in flashes.

“We can make that better by working a bit more at it, but overall, I was really pleased.”

Captain Steve McNulty was utilised alongside Fraser Franks and Luke Wilkinson in defence, and he felt it was a worthwhile exercise, saying: “He mentioned it (the formation) pre-­season, saying he might want to try it.

“We didn’t really try it, we tried it in a closed doors game against each other but we didn’t really go back to it.

“The last couple of sessions he’s done 20 minutes here 20 minutes there, and said he was going to look at it because they played it, and I thought we looked comfortable in it.”
