Still feels Wilkinson is getting back to his best

Town boss John Still believes Luton fans are starting to see the best of central defender Luke Wilkinson now.

The former Dagenham & Redbridge centre half produced a starring display as Luton beat Oxford United 2-0 last weekend, winning 84.09% of the News/Gazette online man of the match poll.

On his inspired recent performances, Still said: “Luke Wilkinson missed most of pre-season. When we signed him, he hurt his back straight away, so he didn’t train when we went out to Portugal.

“Gradually he caught up and we gave him a rest so he could have a fortnight’s complete training where we could really push on with him.

“I think we’re now seeing how good a player Luke Wilkinson is because he’s probably fitter.

“It’s not just about having people in, it’s trying to get them to the right level of fitness, so they can produce their best form consistently and that’s where we hope we’ll be getting to.

“I don’t want to play people who are almost fit, I want to play people who are fit, but sometimes you dont have a choice.”

First team coach Hakan Hayrettin was of a similar opinion too as he added: “I think he was my man of the match (against Oxford).

“He’s getting better every game and maybe a new environment, new club, it takes time to settle.

“Now we’re seeing the best of him and I think he’ll only get better. He’s a good player, that’s why the manager signed him.

“He’s got history with him, he’s got pedigree at this level and he’s one that can enhance the team performance.”
