Still grateful to Irish FA as McGeehan ban lifted

Hatters boss John Still has thanked the Northern Ireland FA for not enforcing a further one match ban on midfielder Cameron McGeehan.

The 20-year-old missed Town’s trip to Cambridge United on Saturday along with the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie against Leyton Orient after being suspended for refusing to play in the U21s Euro 2016 qualifiers against Scotland and Iceland.

McGeehan could have had to sit out this weekend’s trip to Notts County too, but Still confirmed he was available, saying: “The Irish FA did a fantastic thing as he could have had three games which they were talking about.

“I spoke here about he’s a young man and think they’ve done fantastic for him, so I want to thank them for looking at the situation and going, ‘no, we’ll go with the two games.’

“Michael O’Neill and the people around him that make these decisions, I want to thank them for allowing this young man to serve the two game ban, which if they feel is the right thing to do, I haven’t got any problem with that.

“It was the third game that I felt might be a bit much because he’s not an experienced man.”

Winger Paddy McCourt is also available for selection after he was with the senior Northern Ireland squad for their Euro 2016 qualifiers against both the Faroe Islands and Hungary.

Still continued: “He’s fit, ready, raring to go and trying to see if he can get back in the team.

“He enjoyed his spell and it’s fantastic for his country isn’t it. At this stage to almost be there. I’m really pleased for Paddy and he’s back here ready to push on with us.”

Jack Marriott is also in the squad after serving his one match suspension, as Still expects a near fully fit squad to choose from.

He added: “I’m not sure about (Nathan) Doyle, or (Dan) Potts, or (Paul) Benson, but everyone else is back in training.

“The only one not really pushed on in training is Doyle, but he’s not far behind and we’re not rushing him. They’re all getting a little bit better in terms of their fitness from injury and fitness levels for most of the squad are decent too.”
