Still hails Hatters’ fans ahead of Cambridge clash

The two teams have developed something of a rivalry these days after spending the last few years in the Conference, as United were Town’s main opposition for the title last year.

Hatters eventually triumphed by 19 points and with visiting supporters snapping up 2,000 tickets for the clash, Still said: “The away support is unbelievable and of course that makes a difference.

“I think it’s going to be a super environment to play and think it’s going to be hopefully a very, very entertaining game and hopefully for Luton, a winning game.

“I understand (the rivalry) but I think with managers it’s a bit different,

“With supporters, I’m not saying things are more prominent, but I understand there are certain things like former managers and former players, of course I can.

“Local rivalries are massive for supporters and I’m not saying not big for players, but you can’t have that same feeling.

“If you’re playing for your local club that’s five miles up the road you probably have that in you, but it’s probably not quite the same now.

“I understand for supporters the reason why, and think probably the reasons why the games were so close last year.”

When asked what he expected of Cambridge, the Hatters boss said: “Same as last year, they were strong and competitive with some decent players, their league performances reflected that.

“They were the second best team in the Conference last year, regardless of the fact that they went up, they were the second best team because they finished second in the league.

“They were then good enough to win the cup competition that gets you into the Football League and they won the FA Trophy, so every credit to them.

“We know they’re a strong, determined opponent, but no different to any other opponent.

“We played Cheltenham the other day who were second in the league and were a strong opponent.

“They’re all strong opponents, so we’ve just got to deal with them.”

The U’s have begun life in League Two in decent form, although suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to Exeter in midweek.

Still added: “We get match reports from our scouts, but things can change.

“I don’t know to what extent personally Cambridge have changed if at all, I can see personnel have changed, but has their style changed?

“The reports will tell us that and give us a good indication of what they’re doing, but you have to be aware of all eventualities.

“I think they’ve got one or two things that they weren’t doing last year that they may be looking at this year, so you’ve got to be aware of all eventualities.”
