Still hails Hatters’ improved goal threat

The Luton chief saw his side score three on their travels for the first time since their return to the Football League during last weekend’s 3-1 win at Cambridge United, while they netted twice at Yeovil in their previous match away from Kenilworth Road.

Last term, Hatters managed a paltry 17 in 23 games on the road, while this time hey have already found the net six times in three matches as Still said: “I think it’s a jigsaw and it’s getting the jigsaw right.

“You can only do that with the players that you have and sometimes you can play a team that will benefit you defensive-wise or attacking-wise and it’s finding the balance of that.

“We feel that we’ve got goals in the team and also believe we can defend very, very well too. The first few games we’ve conceded more goals than I would like, but I actually accept that in trying to find the right balance of players, the right combination of players.”

With the additions of Craig Mackail-Smith and Danny Green during the summer, then Still wasn’t surprised Hatters looking more dangerous going forward this term

He continued: “When we had Dan as a younger one, his free kicks were terrific, crossing was terrific.

“He scored against Leyton Orient in the JPT and on Saturday, so he can not only supply, he’s a scorer of goals too.

“We played Craig in the league games and not the cup games, because we want to push him but we want him to have enough rest as well.

“We know that if we can get nine or 10 games into him, this is a player, seriously this is a player, so we’ve got to try and manage him properly.”

Hatters head to Meadow Lane on the back of their first break from action, having played Saturday, Tuesday since the season started.

Still believes it will have benefited them too, adding: “We’ve all breathed out. I like the games, Saturday, Tuesday, but when you’ve had such a run of games, because we’ve had a little bit of success in the cups, it doesn’t give you as much time on the training ground.

“We were able to do a bit more on the training ground, so from that point of view it was ideal for us.

“I’ve seen enough in the games to know that when the players get into it we’ll be fine. But there’s some good teams in this league and if you’re a little bit of it, you’ll get beat.”
