Still happy to banish Morecambe memories

The Hatters had turned in what Still labelled the worst performance since the start of last season at Morecambe on Saturday, where they were well beaten 3-0.

But they put that behind them at the first attempt, with a solid victory over their League Two rivals Shakers, to set up a third round tie at Cambridge.

Still said: “We could have been rubbish and it would have been a vast improvement on Saturday.

“I said to the players, we didn’t play well on Saturday, nowhere near it, but you’re not going to play well every Saturday, it’s not possible.

“You’re going to have a bad day sometimes and we had a bad day, but it didn’t make us the worst team and winning (against Bury) doesn’t make us the best team.

“It makes us a football club that wins more than it loses and we were back to Luton, everyone competitive, everyone knowing their job.

“We know that we don’t concede goals, we conceded some Saturday and it’s like anything else, you do get things that happen.

“I’m not going to say it’s a one off, but it doesn’t happen very often.”

Winger Luke Rooney was also quick to draw a line under the defeat at the Shrimps as he said: “That result has been and gone now, it was a bad day all round, with Macca (Steve McNulty) getting sent off as well.

“It was probably ideal to have a game straight away, you don’t want to wait all week around the training ground.

“It was nice to get back out there, now the momentum is with us as we just put that straight out of our system, so Saturday should be a good one.”

Rooney netted the only goal of the tie moments into the second half and Still admitted he had urged his side to come out firing after the interval.

He added: “We were pretty sure that they would come here and try to keep it tight for 45 as the away team in the cup, like you would do, and try and push on second half.

“We said second half we’ve got to start quick and we did, we were the best team in the second half.

“He (Rooney) put it at the back stick and with people rushing in (it went in). We see it lots of times, it was good skill from Roons, and showed the little bit of extra quality I think we had in the final third.

“It was always going to be a tight game, Bury have had a little slip in form lately, but most of their defeats have been odd goals.”
