Still impressed by Marriott’s progress

Hatters boss John Still has been impressed just how quickly striker Jack Marriott has adapted to League Two football this year.

The 22-year-old, who joined from Ipswich Town in the summer, had enjoyed two decent spells in the Conference with Woking, but had never previously tested himself consistently in the Football League.

Tuesday’s goal against Leyton Orient made it seven for the season already, with Marriott now joint top scorer alongside Cameron McGeehan.

Still said: “He has done really well and what shows the mark of where he is, when after the game (against Orient), he said, ‘I should have had a hat-trick, I should have scored in the first half and the second half.’

“That shows the confidence of him as he said, ‘the game would have been over had I scored at 2-0.’

“But it’s really, really important that you allow people to develop, not just push them, and he ends up feeling a bit down if things go wrong.

“It’s important you do it right with all young people, put them in at the right time, take them out at the right time, but temperament wise he’s very good and Jack’s doing fine.”

Still also thinks that the younger crop at Kenilworth Road are progressing as he had hoped this term, while he reiterated his desire to give Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu more of a role in the first team soon.

He added: “Pottsy (Dan Potts) is coming on, I think he’s done okay, and Cam (Cameron McGeehan) has come up with some goals and done okay.

“The young ones are progressing, while we need to push Pelly (Ruddock Mpanzu) on a little bit now.

“He’s a player because of his pace, I do want to try and push in. I think the next couple of weeks we’re probably going to find Pelly’s fitness levels are very good now.

“He’s been training continuously and be in good contention for a place. With Steve (McNulty) going, the competition for that position is going to get fiercer.

“We’ve got (Mark) O’Brien here and Magnus (Okuonghae) getting some game time is going to come back.

“With bringing in Sean Long too, we hope the competition will maybe help to bring the best out of people as well.”
