Still knows who Town’s penalty taker will be

Hatters boss John Still knows full well who will be stepping up to take a penalty should his side win a spot kick at Southport in the Skrill Premier opener on Saturday, writes Mike Simmonds.

Shaun Whalley had been handed the responsibilities twice during season, although before converting against an Arsenal XI last weekend, faced onfield competition from midfielder Solomon Taiwo.

In the end, Steve McNulty had to step in, but although not revealing who at his press conference yesterday, Still said: “I know my penalty taker.”

After the Arsenal match, the boss had said: “I haven’t picked it yet, but I’ll sort that out.

“Shaun took the last penalty and felt he would be the taker.”

Town now have plenty of options from the spot, with forward Mark Cullen throwing his hat in the ring too.

He added: “I can take penalties. Shaun’s been taking them earlier on in pre-season and if he’s going to be penalty taker during the season, it was good for him to get some practice in.

“Everyone wants to score. Penalties are a good chance for anyone to get a goal. If you get your name on the scoresheet, you’re making headlines aren’t you, so everyone wants to do that.

“There’s no conflict here though, everyone wanted a go and Shaun got it in the end and put it away.”
