The 22-year-old, who was sacked by the Latics this week, was signed on loan from West Ham by Still when boss at Dagenham & Redbridge in November 2011.

Montano has since been released on bail after the spot-fixing allegations as he was filmed claiming he agreed to get himself booked in return for cash, although failed to incur a yellow card in the supposed fixture against Wolves in October.

Still said: “I’m shocked. He was a young boy when we took him, a very, very talented boy.

“It’s alleged at the moment, but if he’s found guilty, I’ve got no sympathy for him.”

Ex-Portsmouth defender Sam Sodje is allegedly the main ring leader in the operation, a fact that also saddened Still.

He said: “I’ve been very, very good friends with Sam Sodje for years.

I know the Sodjes’, have done for years and I know them better than well.

“It’s difficult when you’re dealing with people that you know.”
