Still’s West Ham links helped Pelly deal

Hatters boss John Still felt his close relationship with West Ham United was vital during the permanent transfer of Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu this week, writes Mark Wood.

Still had signed the 20-year-old on loan before he was called back due to injury, but Hatters paid an undisclosed fee to bring the midfielder back on a two and a half year contract.

Still said: “It was just something we kept close to and we have a good relationship with West Ham.

“I thought let’s be bold and ask the question and we did.

“Pelly loved his time here and a lot of people might say the same thing, he has gone from a Premier League club to here.

“If you have a good relationship with people, and I have with some clubs, West Ham being one of them.

“If they feel he might be a good player, but he is not going to play in their first team, if he goes somewhere else and makes that transition it reflects well on them.”

Mpanzu had only appeared once for West Ham in the League Cup and was seen as a centre-half at Upton Park.

But Still very much thinks of him as a midfielder as that is where he blossomed in his brief spell at Kenilworth Road.
