Striker admits you have to shoot to score as his tame effort earns Town victory

HOTSHOT striker Lloyd Owusu hailed the old adage of if you don’t shoot, you don’t score after his tame effort squirmed under Forest Green keeper James Bittner to earn Town a 1-0 win at the New Lawn on Tuesday night, writes Mark Wood.

The 34-year-old forward, who has scored five goals in seven games since signing for the Hatters in January, said: “All I know is you have to get a shot on target. If you don’t shoot you don’t score.

“I always believe no matter where I play I will score goals. That’s what I’m paid to do, to score goals. It’s good movement by Barnesy (Matthew Barnes-Homer) and Claude (Gnakpa).

“I took it to my left side and it went through the keeper’s legs.

“You’ve got to be there as a striker. It was a tough game but we knew we had to be resilient.

“We came here, kept a good base, a good shape and that was the main thing. We know what it is all about and we want to get as high up the table as we can. These are the type of places we’ve got to come and get three points.

“All we’ve got to do is worry about ourselves and not worry about the AFCs (Wimbledon) and Crawleys.”

Owusu also felt slightly hard done by not to be awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box that would surely have led to a red card for Rovers skipper Luke Jones.

He said: “Their centre-half and keeper said he has clipped me and it’s a blatant free-kick. It’s a blind side for the ref. I’m not the kind of guy who just goes down for no reason.”

The striker praised the defence for another clean sheet and admitted he can’t wait for Saturday and the visit of in-form play-off hopefuls Kidderminster Harriers.

He said: “The back five have been tremendous and kept a good solid base. They didn’t really put too much pressure on our back five.

“The fans are unbelievable to come away on a Tuesday. Hopefully come Saturday if they get behind us again we will deliver for them again.”

Manager Richard Money rested the striker during Saturday’s 1-0 FA Trophy win at Guiseley but was glad to have him back and expects full-back Dan Gleeson to also return at the weekend.

He said: “We took the chance on Saturday to give him a bit of a breather because he is important to us.

“The same with Gleeson. He could have started but we thought a couple of days extra would be better to have an offensive full-back at home.

“It was an important game to win I felt. We’ve only lost one league game since November 11.”
