Sweet confident there is support for additional promotion spots from the Conference

TURKEYS really could vote for Christmas according to managing director Gary Sweet if the issue of increasing the number of promotion spots up from the Conference was ever voted on by Football League chairmen, writes Mark Wood.

The matter is one of many that was set to come up at the Football League’s annual general meeting in Portugal and the Luton chief is adamant things must change.

Chairman of League Two strugglers Barnet Tony Kleanthous recently stated he was in favour of a change and Sweet doesn’t believe he is the only one.

Kleanthous said: “We’d have gone down if the extra place had been there, but none of that changes my view.

“As far as I am concerned, it’s absolutely the right thing for football.”

Sweet is hoping that the topic will also be discussed at the Conference’s AGM this week.

He said: “I’m hoping we will certainly discuss the issue of three or four up and down into the League.

“It’s very admirable of Tony to do so because apparently he is one of the turkeys. I know of one other Football League chairman who would vote for it if it went that far.”
