Luton chief executive Gary Sweet has reassured fans that even if Town are faced with the financial 'horror' of playing League One football again next season, the club won't be one of those who have to call in the administrators.

Sweet recently revealed that relegation back to the third tier could cost Hatters around £6m, a sum that with no match-day income generated due to the coronavirus for the foreseeable future, will be a massive blow.

After a week in which Championship rivals Wigan Athletic are expected to be deducted 12 points for entering administration and Julian Knight, chair of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport Committee, declared that '10 to 15 clubs could find themselves in the same position,' Sweet moved to allay any fears that Luton's supporters might have they will follow suit.

Writing his programme ahead of Luton's game with Reading on Saturday, he said: “Whatever happens today and the following five games in 18 days, we can justifiably feel proud and dignified about how we've gone about our business.

“Whilst business has been very difficult for us over the last four months, Luton Town will not be one of those clubs who will face administration.

"This is largely thanks to your generosity and support, for which we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

"I can't underestimate how much more difficult it will be should our fate see us in League One next season, mostly and genuinely due to us having to take on Championship level debt when we’ll need to recover with a fraction of Championship income, all of which has been outside of our control.

“But we must remain confident of avoiding that horror for now.”
