Huddersfield Town manager Mark Fotheringham felt the performance produced by his struggling side gave Luton a real ‘shock to the system’ as they picked up the first point of his short managerial reign during the 3-3 draw at Kenilworth Road last night.

Going into the game, the former Norwich and Celtic midfielder, whose coaching background had come in Germany, with Karlsruher SC, FC Ingolstadt and Hertha BSC, had taken just one game in charge of the 23rd placed Terriers, that a 3-1 defeat to Reading.

In his second match at the helm, Fotheringham saw the visitors take the lead twice in the first half against the Hatters, before swapping ends 3-2 behind.

However, the visitors hit back to earn a point with 20 minutes to go, as speaking afterwards, the Terriers chief, whose side did have more possession with 53 per cent, although conceded 24 shots, 10 on target, said: “Nathan Jones and his staff are a good, honest staff.

"What they do is they really care for Luton Town and they put in so much work and effort.

“As a team it can be a shock to the system at times, when you see a team that's at the bottom of the table, to play against a team that plays attacking football.

"We had five players in the front-line today and it was a real credit to them.

"You don't normally see that from a team at our place in the table.

“We penned Luton in for long periods - but we can't get too ahead of ourselves because we know this league can bite you in the backside.

"We can do better at both ends of the pitch though.

"The structure was good but our final decisions or the final pass or final run was not quite what we've worked with in training.

“These things are coming as the games go on, as I want to bring that German flair and creativity to the side, but we've got so much more to work on.”

It was Sorba Thomas who caused Town havoc all evening from his set-pieces, the first nodded into the net by Carlton Morris, the second leading to Huddersfield winning a penalty when Michal Helik’s header struck the outstretched hand of Dan Potts, Jordan Rhodes doing the rest.

Then in the second half, another dead-ball delivery was headed past his own keeper by a stooping Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu, as on the Welsh international’s impact at Kenilworth Road, Fotheringham added: “Sorba is one of the best players in the Championship.

“His set-piece delivery is out of this world and I think the fans are going to be excited as we've got good variety in the set-plays as well.

“It was a difficult game, the manner in which we lost our goals were bitterly disappointing, because when you come to a place like this you have to start from a solid base.

“We did have a good security, we looked solid, and we knew what we were going to expect, but it was really the manner in which we lost the goals that hurt me.

“There is a lot of room for improvement, so we've just got to keep patient and keep working on a daily basis.”
