Tommy confident he’ll be in the Wright place

NEW signing Tommy Wright has backed himself to score the goals to spearhead Luton Town’s promotion push this season, writes Mike Simmonds.

The 27-year-old was a surprise addition to the squad on Monday, agreeing a three month deal at Kenilworth Road after ending his spell at Kidderminster Harriers.

He hasn’t been prolific in his career to date, netting 38 goals in over 200 appearances, but believes he can’t fail with the Town supply-line.

Wright said: “I was looking at a DVD, and the amount of crosses the team seem to get in, that’s the kind of thing I’ll thrive on.

“Hopefully I can get myself in the box and get on the end of things.

“I’ll throw my head in front of anything. The manager’s given me stick as he says I’m an ugly lad, but I’ll never shy away from that (the physical side).

“Goals are what I will be judged on though, putting myself about is part of the parcel.

“He’s (Gary Brabin) told me what he wants me to do. He doesn’t want me to play down the channels too much, he wants me to lay it off, get into the box and challenge for things in the air.

“That’s what I’m prepared to do and hopefully we can get some goals from it.”

Wright had been training with the club before Saturday’s 5-1 hammering of Gateshead, but the deal couldn’t be done in time for the weekend.

When it was finally completed on Monday, he couldn’t wait to take the opportunity to become a Luton player. He continued: “Late Thursday night I had a phone call and I came down to training on Friday.

“I got told it wouldn’t be going through before the game on Saturday.

“The lads go and get a great result against Gateshead and I spoke to him (Brabin) again Saturday, came down Monday and trained and it got sorted out quite quickly.

“I was on non contract at Kidderminster and very nearly killed myself to January as you’re only allowed two clubs in the window.

“So it was quite clever the way they did the paperwork.

“It didn’t take me long at all to make my mind up. I had a conversation with the manager and when he told me he wanted to bring me in, it was a done deal to be honest.”

Brabin explained why he brought Wright to the club, saying: “We haven’t got that type as we have searched for that type since the start of the season. With injuries to Amari Morgan-Smith, who is going to be out for a couple of weeks, it was essential that we brought another forward in.

“We spoke about getting a few more bodies in the box and Tommy Wright is that type of player.”

Wright is still short of football as he only made two substitute appearances for Harriers this season and played 24 times for Darlington last year.

He said: “I’ve had hardly anything at all. It was great to get a couple of outings on the bench at Kidderminster, but I didn’t get the full 90.

“Hopefully I can get a bit more game time and get my match sharpness back.

“I didn’t play as much as I would like last year, got myself a few goals, but it’s been a slow start.

“We’re near the end of October and I need to be knocking on the door to get on the pitch.”

Wright didn’t know a great deal of the Town players either, saying: “Jamie Hand, I’ve had a couple of England trips away with him, so I know him quite well.

“Danny Crow, I basically grew up playing against him when he was a Norwich but other than that not so much.”

Although Town suffered a disappointing loss on Wright’s debut in midweek and dropped eight points behind in the title race, he remains confident they can reach top spot.

Wright added: “We need to come in and get that out of our system and go again Friday (at Grimsby). When you’re playing Saturday and Tuesday, you can still pick up points, there’s a lot of football to be played. Wrexham will be up there and I’m sure Gateshead, York, Fleetwood, there are some good teams in this league. I’m sure it will go all the way and don’t think there will be a runaway leader like it was last year with Crawley.

“I think it will go the full distance and the final 10 games it will start shaping up a little bit better.”
