Town boss eyes Spanish duo

LUTON Town manager Gary Brabin is running the rule over two Spanish players as his side continue their pre-season preparation in Scotland, writes Mike Simmonds.

Hatters headed north of the border on Tuesday for a mini boot camp in Ayrshire with Brabin eager to see if the Spaniards could fit into his squad for the new campaign.

He said: “We’ve got two Spanish lads with us who have come over.

“We’re having a look at the moment. One’s a centre half and one’s a central midfielder.

“They’ve both played at the top level in Spain and one’s played at the top level in Portugal, so they’ve got a good pedigree.”

Brabin didn’t rule out bringing in further trialists over the next few weeks too, with Hatters beginning their pre-season fixtures at Hitchin Town a week on Friday.

He continued: “I’m very open- minded.

“One thing I don’t want to do is just bring in a load of trialists and cheapen our pre-season training.

“But if anyone we think is worth bringing in and having a look at, we will do.”

Defenders Freddie Murray and Ed Asafu-Adjaye are also in Scotland and Brabin confirmed that new contracts with the pair are almost done and dusted.

He said: “It’s all been verbally agreed. It’s just a case of dotting i’s, crossing t’s.

“Both are with the squad and I’m delighted with the players we have got, although we would like to add some more quality to what we’ve got.”

It has been an interesting trip north for Brabin and his squad. The manager explained: “We left at 9 o’clock and got pulled over by the police for a routine check on the coach which delayed us a good hour.

“We went to Blackburn Rovers and had a good session there to break up the journey.

“We’re up here until Saturday and St Johnstone have just left the training camp, while Queens Park are going to be here.

Wigan Athletic are coming up too, so we’ve had some quality training sessions.

“It’s a good camp and good to get everyone together and meet the new lads too.”
