Town captain believes Hatters look like title contenders

Hatters captain Ronnie Henry felt his side displayed the hallmarks of title-winners as they triumphed 2-1 at Braintree Town on Tuesday night, writes Mike Simmonds.

The Iron’s Cressing Road stadium had not been the happiest of hunting grounds for Luton in recent years, with Town turning in awful performances during both defeats.

But goals from Paul Benson and Andy Parry saw them emerge victorious as Henry said: “We’ve come here and this is where titles are won.

“It’s not the nice easy Saturday at Kenilworth Road in front of the big crowds, these are the games you’ve got to win.

“You can think about last year, but that was a different situation. This year, the boys are focused, they know what they want.

“Not many teams will come here, especially on a Tuesday night and win as they’re a tough side, especially when conditions don’t make it easy.”

Henry had been involved during Town’s shocking 2-0 defeat last season, so it made him even more proud that they came away with the victory this time, as he felt his side played the conditions perfectly.

He continued: “I’m very proud, it’s a difficult place to come and I remember last year, we got well and truly beat.

“We started very well and it was one thing we needed to do, one thing I said in the huddle, we need to set our stall out.

“We put it in the right areas, we had a gameplan and the gameplan worked very well to put it in the corners and play the conditions.

“It wasn’t one for passing it around and I thought we were quite comfortable until they scored that deflection and put some pressure on but fair play to the lads

“The focus was always to win as we have to keep winning games as we have to keep up with the top of the league.”

Manager John Still was well aware of the test that awaited his side before the game too, as he continued: “I’ve known this club, I’ve known Dev (manager Alan Devonshire) for years and his assistant Keith Rowlands.

“They work really hard with these players and whoever comes here, it’s tough.

“I spoke to Justin (Edinburgh, Newport manager) about their game here on Saturday and he said I don’t envy you going there as the pitch was not great on Saturday and we’ve churned it up.

“I said beforehand they’re really strong at home and they are, and they’re going to raise their game because it’s Luton.

“So to put all that in the mixing pot and come out of it and we’ve won 2-1, I’m absolutely delighted against a team that will win lots of games here.

“It’s a performance really that might sound a bit soppy, but made me feel very proud to be the manager.”

Town moved up to second place in the table after Kidderminster were held by a late Macclesfield leveller at Moss Rose.

Goalscorer Parry was pleased to Hatters continue to climb the table as they try to overhaul leaders Cambridge United.

He said: “We want to win the league, we want to be at the top, so we’re moving closer.”
