Luton boss Nathan Jones is confident his side will begin to reap the rewards from their work on the training ground and start finding the net with more regularity away from home.

So far Town have scored just six goals from their 14 matches outside of Bedfordshire, easily the worst record in the division, and are currently on a run of netting just two in eight after drawing blanks at both Blackburn and Brentford, despite creating some excellent opportunities.

Hatters' away profligacy run has prevented them from climbing further up the table in recent weeks, with just one in win in their last nine games on the road, after a fine start to the campaign when Town won three from five.

Jones believes the tide will turn though, and soon, as he said: "We’ve worked on a lot of stuff now, tweaking certain things so I’m sure that we’ll get the reward for our work.

"The hardest thing in football is to score a goal.

“When we’re at our limit, then sometimes we don’t get what we deserve, but we have to show a little more composure and control at times.

“It’s not for the lack of trying because we had far in excess the amount of chances that Huddersfield had the other day.

"And, to be fair, the goal that we conceded was as poor as we’ve conceded for a long, long time, in terms of set-up and how it went in.

“We’ve just got to make sure we keep doing the right things and if we do that results will follow.”

The Town boss has been satisfied with the amount of opportunities his team are creating, but just wants that clinical edge to come through more in the opposition's box.

He continued: "Even in the Brentford game, we had umpteen chances to score goals and weren’t quite clinical enough, they were more clinical than us.

“There’s going to come a time when performances won’t matter and it’s just about results, but right now we’re showing we’re a good Championship side.

“We just have to have that edge when we’re on top.

“Both Blackburn and Huddersfield’s goals were so avoidable it’s unreal, they were poor, poor, poor goals to give away and that doesn’t happen to us really often.

“So, we’ve got to tighten up that end, take chances at the other end and then you’ll win more games than you lose.

“We want to score goals, some are clear-cut and we’re having better chances that most teams we’re playing against.

“It’s just that we’ve got to have that belief, we’ve got to show the technique, composure and quality in the final third and that’s what we’ve got to do.

“Between both boxes we’re a good side and we don’t concede many.

“Realistically, we’re a very difficult side to beat and to play against because we’re organised, structured, we work hard and press.

"We’re aggressive, so the goals will come if we keep creating the chances.”

When reflecting on his side's lack of goals so far, both home and away, with just 22 scored in Town's 27 matches, Jones added: "We do realise that it’s a tough league so there’s no God-given right to win and win and win.

"We’re in a good place in terms of our performance levels but what we have to do now is make sure those performance levels turn into (results).

“If you’re keeping clean sheets, we usually score a goal. If we keep clean sheets and then take our chances, then we’re in a much better position to do well.

“Games come, there’s different tests week in, week out.

"Whether it’s direct tests, fluent tests, footballing tests, whatever it is they’re so different.

“It’s not one thing, every single week is different and this weekend will different from the test we had last week and the week before.

“It’s such a good league, it’s such a competitive league and to win games you have to be, one, at your best and, two, when you are at your best, score goals, take chances.

“But we do realise there’s no God-given right, so we’ve got to keep working hard, doing the right things, showing our quality and upping our performance slightly, especially in front of goal.

“But if we keep clean sheets and do the basics then you only need one to score.

"We would like to score plenty, but it’s at both ends as well.”
