Town chief expecting ins and outs during final stages of transfer window

Luton have until 7pm on Monday to make new signings

Hatters boss Jack Wilshere is still anticipating a busy end to the transfer window as he looks to improve his squad for the run-in to the League One campaign.

The Town chief saw his side rekindle their fading play-off hopes with a 1-0 victory over Blackpool at Kenilworth Road yesterday, although wins for all the sides in third to sixth meant they didn’t make any headway on getting above the dotted line. Since clubs were allowed to do business from New Year’s Day, Wilshere has added three players, with Emilio Lawrence and Kasey Palmer arriving in Bedfordshire, followed by Port Vale’s leading scorer Devante Cole on a permanent basis yesterday.

With a number of players moving on, mainly on loan, Christ Makosso heading to Championship outfit Oxford United ahead of yesterday’s triumph, then the Town chief still has four possible spots to play with at the moment. On whether he thinks there will be further incomings or outgoings in the closing stages of the window, speaking yesterday, he said: “Yes, definitely.

"I said yesterday that me and the recruitment team are working really hard and we will be. I’m actually glad that it shuts at seven so I can get home before midnight on Monday. We’re working, I’ll be speaking with them now, we’ll be in tomorrow looking to try and find solutions to improve the team.”

Meanwhile, Hatters chairman David Wilkinson knows it is a tricky time of the season to bring players in, as writing in his programme notes this weekend, he continued: “We all know how historically difficult the January window is. Generally, clubs hold on to make their moves very late in the day, and often other clubs make signings as knee-jerk reactions. While we may have already seen, or will see more movement before 7pm on Monday, there are a few important things that supporters need to bear in mind.

“It is, of course, Jack’s first window and he is involved in every part of the process, along with the recruitment committee and other members of the coaching staff, especially Chris. Since the summer window, we’ve changed manager, and with that, there has been a transition in style of play, which Jack naturally wants to recruit players for.”

Joining Makosso in exiting the Hatters are Milli Alli, who scored and assisted for Portsmouth in their 3-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion yesterday, while Zack Nelson, Ethon Archer, Lasse Nordas and Joe Gbode have all headed out as well. Asked about the decision to allow them to leave, Wilkinson spoke of the new style that was being implemented by Wilshere, adding: “Every manager is going to have his own views on how players fit into their system, and while there have been undoubted successes in players who were recruited to play under the two previous managers, some are just not suited to how Jack wants his team to play and it is better for their development to move elsewhere to play regular football, even if it is temporarily.

"That doesn’t make them bad players, or poor signings, and their time may come again with us, or build their value resulting in that re-investment into the squad. Milli Alli has started well at Portsmouth, and Ethon Archer and Zack Nelson have chosen to join fellow League One clubs where they could hurt some of the teams around us, because we know their quality.

“Lasse Nordås is gaining great experience in the Dutch top-flight, while Joe Gbodé could only move to a National League club domestically because he’d already played in the EFL for Gillingham and ourselves this season – a move he wanted to play more football. Joe could end up playing at Wembley twice if he impacts Woking’s season positively, and we wish all of our boys well out on their loans.”
