Carden, 32, who spent time at Kenilworth Road on loan last season, was released from his role as player/assistant manager by Cambridge at the end of the campaign.
He was part of the coaching staff for Town’s pre-season friendlies and after impressing in the role, took on the position permanently.
He said: “I know I’m not going to be a League One player in two years time. I’m not soft enough or trying to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes.
“In terms of being a first team coach, then in two years time there’s no reason why Luton Town can’t be in League One and I can’t be first team coach.”
