Town impressing assistant Neilson

TOWN assistant boss Alan Neilson believes that Luton’s slimline squad will be a force to be reckoned with in the Blue Square Bet Premier this season, writes Mike Simmonds.

Aaron O’Connor’s departure to Newport County on Wednesday made it 15 who have exited Kenilworth Road in the close season, with eight replacing them.

Neilson has been impressed by the summer recruitment though, especially with the forward options Town now boast.

He said: “If you look at our squad now and look at the frontline, Andre Gray is very powerful, very pacey.

“Dan Walker has lightning quick feet, Scott Rendell is a bit taller, better in the air, has great quality on the ball, it’s all looking good.”

Rendell in particular gave a fine performance at AFC Dunstable, before opening his account for the side against St Albans, while the likes of JJ O’Donnell and Yaser Kasim have stood out for Neilson in the warm up games so far.

He added: “Scott Rendell can play up top, can play in the hole, wide of the three.

“He’s played at this level and has quality on the ball with his little flicks.

“JJ is improving all the time, he’s the most improved player at the club, that’s what I think.

“The new manager has come in and he’s been given a new lease of life.

“He’s gone out on loan, like Adam Watkins did, as he came back and played first team matches last season.

“JJ’s playing that role in midfield, finding little pockets and has a great left foot.

“Yaser has been at Spurs and you’re not at Spurs if you’re a poor player. He’s been at Brighton and we all know how they play as well, they pass it.

“He’s a great passer of the ball, has great, quick feet and we’ve seen what he can add.

“There’s competition for places upfront, in midfield and at the back, so it’s all good.”
