Underdogs Luton ready to upset moneybags Crawley

Hatters prepare to host league leaders

‘Underdogs’ Luton are looking to cause an upset when free-spending Crawley come to Town tomorrow night, writes Mark Wood.

The Blue Square Bet Premier leaders have already spent almost £600,000 on players this term and Hatters boss Richard Money believes their claims that they have another million to spend in the transfer window makes them clear favourites.

But the boss also believes that Town can still cause an upset against Steve Evans’ side.

Money said: “We watched the Wimbledon game and saw them last week.

“They won nine of the first 13 games which is a very impressive start and they will expect to be able to come here and win tomorrow.

“I never expected to be the manager of Luton Town and to be underdogs but it is one of those occasions.

“We need a big atmosphere tomorrow night and touch wood we are in good form at home and playing well.

“They are a very good team and started well and I have nothing but admiration for the way they’ve gone about it.

“It would be unusual for us to go into a game as underdogs but that’s the way it is and underdogs do win.

“It’s going to take the best we can give, anything short of that will not be good enough.

“If we want to compete for that number one spot we need to come off the pitch with the right result tomorrow otherwise it will make life very difficult for us given the statement that came out of the club at the weekend.”

Money feels that Crawley have spent their money wisely so far, bringing the likes of Steve Brodie, Matt Tubbs and Pablo Mills in, and is aware they may be able to buy success.

He continued: “I don’t think there’s any doubt about that to be honest with you.

“Let’s get one thing clear, we have to have a real sense of admiration that they are prepared to put their neck on the block and they’ve been very open they are going to have a real go at winning this league.

“It’s one thing having money to spend and another spending it wisely and they appear to have done that.

“If they’ve got another million to spend in January then there’s no doubt about that.

“It’s no secret that he (Steve Evans) tried to buy both Matthew Barnes-Homer and Tom Craddock off of us.

“He obviously had a shopping list of the best players in this league and has been able to get a lot of them so fair play and he will aim to get more in January.”

On the playing front, Adam Newton is definitely ruled out with a troublesome achilles, but Dan Gleeson had recovered from a facial injury and is available for tomorrow.

Star winger Andy Drury didn’t train today but Money is confident he will be fit to play against the Red Devils.

He added: “I’m pretty sure he will be OK for tomorrow and have no injury problems at all.”
