Incandescent O’Donnell and team-mate Scott Rendell reacted angrily to the ‘horrific’ scissor tackle that forced the Welsh U21 international off.

On the tackle on Howells, who was celebrating his 22nd birthday, O’Donnell said: “Maybe it’s a happy birthday from him to Jake, ‘have that!’ But Howellsy hurt himself.

“ You can consider it a nothing game and to make tackles like that it’s just ludicrous.

“There’s no need for it. Howellsy’s one of our boys and if he makes tackles like that on one of our lads then he should face the repercussions, which he did with the red card.”
