Hatters boss John Still is set to miss Luton Town’s game against Gateshead on Carlisle on Saturday as he heads off on a scouting mission to a mystery destination, writes Mark Wood.

Assistant Terry Harris will take the reins for the long trip, and Still indicated this could happen several times between now and the end of the season as player identification becomes the priority.

With Luton’s chances of a play-off place now entirely gone the Hatters’ coaching staff are focusing on identifying and bringing in new talent for their promotion push next season.

Still said: “I’m not going (to Carlisle)! I won’t be there on Saturday. This is now the time I need to look at one or two players, as does Terry (Harris), not both together.

“Either one of us will probably not do the same games together between now and the end of the season.

“We now have to make some decisions on players we’ve been watching and Saturday will be one of them.”

Having already signed Millwall defender Jake Goodman on loan until the end of the season and netted Maidenhead United striker Alex Wall and former Dagenham & Redbridge charges Solomon Taiwo and Scott Griffiths, he doesn’t anticipate bringing in any other new faces until the summer.

Still said: “I wouldn’t think that there would be anyone. We couldn’t play them anyway so I wouldn’t really see the point in bringing people in now unless there was a particular reason that you had to.

“I don’t think that that will be the case. I think that from season end, ‘til season start, there will be chops and changes.

“I would think sooner rather than later as well. I think once the season ends we might be able to identify who is going to come in.

“But probably the first time it will become really noticeable will be in pre-season training, although that doesn’t mean to say that everything will be done by then.

“I’m sure through July, pre-season training, there will be one or two, three or four added to what we have.

“I think that the most important thing now is identification, which is the process that we’ve been going through and will continue to go through and it’s important obviously that I see as many of these as is possible.

“Some I know and perhaps don’t have to see because I know them anyway, but there’s still I few I need to see, or indeed Terry Harris has to see.

“That sort of thing between now and the end of the season is very important.”

Town are still waiting for Alex Lawless to sign the new deal he has been offered, but Still doesn’t see it being a problem, adding: “I can’t tell you an news on that but I’m sure the negotiations are under way and I don’t see it being an issue.”
