Cameron McGeehan comes close to his fourth goal of the season against Mansfield

The 20-year-old has been poring over highlights’ reels showcasing the likes of the former Chelsea midfielder in goalscoring action, as he looks to replicate that role at Kenilworth Road.

McGeehan said: “It’s not something that’s come to me, I’ve worked hard at it.

“I’ve worked hard at my fitness and worked hard at my shooting and finishing with Andy Awford, whose a good coach, with David James and with Terry (Harris), Hakan (Hayrettin), Kev Dearden and the gaffer too.

“They’ve given me good pointers as well as taking me through videos recently of Frank Lampard and Bryan Robson, saying ‘this is how we want you to do it’.

“That’s helped a lot, as I’ve managed to get three and probably should have scored more.

“But I know I will get great opportunities from good runs and also good play all round as the team understands each other a bit more now.”

McGeehan was aware it might be a while before the team gelled, but once it does, he is confident his goal threat will be even greater.

He continued: “It was always going to take time to bed in and realise what each player needs.

“(Craig) Mackail-Smith, I know that he’s a good runner so wants it in behind, or if I’m playing with Danny Green I know he wants it to his feet.

“We’ve got clever players like Paddy McCourt as well so we need to understand what wavelength everybody is on.”

Meanwhile, McGeehan, who is the club’s joint leading scorer, reiterated his desire to make it past 10 for the campaign, especially in his new advanced role, adding: “I’ve got a number in my head, I want to get double figures. I’ve had a good start and I can score more goals playing in that higher position.

“I wanted to do it last year, but for whatever reason I wasn’t able to as I think it was through injuries.

“That’s why I probably didn’t hit the ground running as much as I would have liked to do last year, it was a tough spell, but I got three goals.

“I scored six in total as I was at Cambridge from the end of January, so over a season you’re looking at 15 plus goals.

“I can see why the manager would say he’d like me to play higher up the pitch because I can score.

“I’m happy to play deeper in a passing sense, but if the team needs me higher to score goals, then that’s where I’d like to play.”
