The 27-year-old, who freely admits he has been ‘awful’ in his time at Kenilworth Road, produced an inspirational second half display during the 3-0 win over Mansfield Town at the weekend.

Whalley netted his first league goal for Luton since October 8, and he added a brilliant second from outside the box after a mazy run.

He said: “The gaffer has shown incredible faith in me.

“He probably could have got rid of me in the summer in all honesty but he’s stuck with me.

“I’ll never forget that as he just put me back in off the training ground when we were on a long unbeaten run.

“He knows I can do it and I know I can do it, I just want to prove him right and he wants to be proved right as well, so hopefully I’ve done that.”

On just why it’s taken Whalley so long to show his true colours in a Luton shirt since signing from Southport the previous summer, the winger wasn’t sure.

He’s hoping to start his third game in succession as Town travel to Bury this weekend and is well aware he needs to keep showing his capabilities.
