A strong Hatters side including Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu, Andy Drury and Fraser Franks, took the lead five minutes before the break when Ricky Miller was brought down in the United penalty area and Shaun Whalley fired home the spot-kick.

Whalley then doubled his and the Town’s tally five minutes after half-time when he fired home after a fine run.

Cambridge pulled a goal back on the hour mark, but the Hatters restored their two-goal advantage 10 minutes later when Luke Rooney slotted home after a mazy run.

Hatters then wraped up their third win of the campaign when Charlie Walker rifled home a superb 25-yard strike.

First team coach Hakan Hayrettin told the club’s official website: “It was a terrific performance from the boys. We showed great professionalism, and quality when it mattered.

“We told the boys to up the tempo in the second half and we got our rewards with three great goals.
