Whalley’s penalty earns Town a point at Pompey

Charlie Walker and Shaun Whalley were on target as Luton Town drew 2-2 at Portsmouth in the Final Third Development League on Tuesday afternoon.

Fielding a young side with a number of U18s involved, Hatters were up against an experienced Pompey team including former England international Nicky Shorey.

Nigel Atangana flashed an early header wide, but on six minutes, the hosts led when Andy Barcham netted.

Whalley’s tested home keeper Michael Poke, before Elliot Justham made a superb save from Atangana.

Walker was next be denied by Poke who turned his shot round the post, but the Luton striker had his goal on 27 minutes, with a low drive.

The summer signing headed over after a flowing move, as Pompey retook the lead through Atangana.

In the second period, Justham saved from Miles Storey, before Luton levelled again when Chad Field tripped Whalley, who slammed home the penalty.

Whalley then fired off target, before Justham preserved a point, brilliantly tipping over Adam Webster’s shot.
