Wilkinson backing for Hatters keeper Tyler

Hatters centre half Luke Wilkinson refused to attach any blame to goalkeeper Mark Tyler after Luton were held to a 2-2 draw by Oxford United on Saturday.

The recalled stopper came for a deep cross in injury time, but failed to collect as the ball was eventually turned over the line by U’s substitute Pat Hoban amidst a goalmouth scramble for the visitors’ last-gasp leveller.

Wilkinson said: “It’s massively disappointing and I’m not really sure what’s gone on as I’ve got my man for Tyles to come and get it.

“As I’ve turned, I’ve just seen it drop to their man and go across goal. Then their player missed it at first and at the second attempt he’s swiped it in.

“It was just a mistake by a man who you can really rely on as Tyler’s an excellent goalkeeper, but people make mistakes and these things happen.

“I’m going to make mistakes this season and other players too, it won’t be the first and won’t be the last.

“We’ve got to get round him, but I’m sure he’ll be fine as he’s a very experienced goalkeeper.”

Wilkinson does believe that Tyler will face some serious competition for his place from number two Elliot Justham this season as he added: “He’ll be pushing Tyles all the way as he wants to play.”
