Wilkinson confident his side can outdo unbeaten run

The centre half was part of the side that went 11 games unbeaten in League Two between September 13 and November 22, as from a disappointing start, Luton made their way to the summit.

This term, Luton head to Hartlepool on the back of three straight wins as Wilkinson believe manager John Still’s activity in the transfer market is starting to pay off.

He said: “I think we started similar last season, I know we won our opening game, but we started slow.

“We then had a run of eight or nine games being unbeaten, but this team is capable of doing more than that.

“I think we’ve probably got a better squad this year, no disrespect to the squad we had last year. We’ve got to go to places like Morecambe and get three points which we did, and that’s no disrespect to Morecambe, but we have.

“We’ve got to take it game by game and hopefully we just keep racking up the points and going as far up the table as we can.

“We come away from home expecting to win. If you come away with a draw it’s still a good result, as long as you pick the points up at home.

“We’ll go to Hartlepool expecting to win. It’s another big game for us and hopefully we can go there and get three points.”

One of Still’s main pieces of business in the summer was signing striker Craig Mackail-Smith and Wilkinson admitted he is glad the former Brighton and Peterborough frontman is a team-mate and not an opposing player.

He added: “I’d hate to play against him! He never stops running, his goals will come too. He deserves another goal, so just hopefully he keeps working like that for the team.

“It doesn’t really matter who scores the goals as long as we’re scoring goals and winning games.”
