Wilkinson demands Town push on after maiden win

Wilkinson had played every minute of what turned out be a winless August for Luton in terms of league matches.

However, he was on target at the weekend as Cambridge were defeated 3-1 and ahead of the trip to Notts County this Saturday, he said: “Now it’s time to really step up to the plate. It’s no more excuses now; we’ve got to push on and really climb the league.

“We’ll go to Notts County thinking we can win. Hopefully we come back with another three points from another away game and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Wilkinson admitted he hadn’t been overly worried by going five games without a victory, continuing: “Not really as just knowing the talent we’ve got in the squad.

“Like the gaffer said, his teams start a little bit slower and it’s been longer than we thought to get a win in the league.”

The centre half, signed from Dagenham & Redbridge in the summer of 2014, appears to have been given the chance to cement a partnership at the back with recent acquisition Scott Cuthbert.

The duo have been paired together in the heart of Town’s defence for the last two league games with club captain Steve McNulty a substitute and Magnus Okuonghae returnin to full fitness.

On the battle for a place in defence, Wilkinson said: “It’s good for us all, if you know you’re going to play every week, it’s a little bit easy.

“Every team needs that to push players on as you can get complacent if you don’t have the competition behind you.

“So to have that pressure on you to play well week in week out is brilliant.”
