Wilkinson hopes hamstring injury is not serious

The summer signing from Dagenham & Redbridge had headed home a fourth goal of the season for Luton after half an hour, but came off to be replaced by Fraser Franks just before half time.

Wilkinson is hoping to be fit for next weekend’s trip to Oxford United though, saying: “It’s frustrating to have to come off, but it was a precaution.

“I’ve got a tight hamstring and it was better than being out for four, five or six weeks with a torn hamstring or anything like that.

“So hopefully I’ll be okay for next weekend, but everyone’s good enough to play in the team here.

“There’s always that risk that you’re going to cause more damage to yourself, so it’s better to let someone else come on and go off to look after yourself.”

Town first team coach Hakan Hayrettin felt it was the right call too as he said: “His hamstring was a bit right and he didn’t want to take too many chances with that.

“It was precautionary before it went completely and he decided to come off. He can make that decision, so he came off to protect it and hopefully he’ll be available for next week.”

Meanwhile, on Wilkinson’s towering header, which was followed by the defender’s customary knee slide, Hayrettin added: “From where I was, it was an outstanding jump. He rose well above everyone else.

“He’s scored some important goals for us from set-pieces and he’s done it again. We’ve emphasised how important set-pieces are and it was a great finish.

“We earned the right to get the corner and scored from it.”
