Wilkinson remains a doubt for Newport trip

The 25-year-old missed his first minutes in the league on Tuesday night with a thigh strain as a shambolic defensive display saw Luton beaten 4-3 by Carlisle after leading 3-1.

On whether he would be ready to return in Wales, boss John Still said: “I don’t know yet, he hasn’t trained today, he’s a lot, lot better, but we’ve got until Saturday, so there’s a little bit of time.”

With both Scott Cuthbert and Mark O’Brien producing substandard performances against the Cumbrians in midweek, there is a slight chance summer signing Magnus Okuonghae could be given his league debut after recovering from a foot injury.

Still continued: “Magnus’ record at Colchester was exemplary, now he’s coming back to fitness, but we think he’ll be a massive asset.

“Magnus has trained today and trained on Tuesday as well, so it gives us another option.

“It would be too early today to look at Saturday, I’ll know a little bit more tomorrow.

“We’ve got enough time if something needs to be a little bit better, but he’s training.

“When he came back from Hartlepool, he had a foot injury, nothing to do with his previous injury. Is he ready yet? We had looked at him playing on Wednesday in reserves, so we’ll have to have a look tomorrow.”

It could be the same for midfielder Nathan Doyle who was on the bench against Carlisle, with Still saying: “Doyle has trained again and has now had two more days training, so that’s good, we’re happy with that.

“We put him on the bench, but he hasn’t done anything since the injury, he hasn’t even had a development game.

“In an ideal world, Magnus and Doyle would play for the reserves (against Cambridge) on Wednesday and that will tell us where they are, because training is different to games.

“It would be a decent test and because we have a free week first team next week we can work them quite hard as well and put some sessions on that are really going to rest them.

“So it’s too early to say they won’t be involved Saturday or they will be involved Saturday.”

Striker Paul Benson will sit out the second game of his suspension, while Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu remains out, as do Luke Guttridge and Dan Potts as Still added: “Potts has got a slight hamstring and Gutts has got a slight pull behind the back of his knee, a slight tear. Nothing terrible, but not yet.”
