Work pays off for Hatters keeper

IT was a case of safety first for keeper Mark Tyler on Tuesday night as he pulled off three great stops to ensure Luton beat Grimsby 1-0, writes Mark Wood.

His best came at the death as he pushed Robert Eagle’s bouncing shot round a post.

Tyler, 33, said: “It bobbled through and to be fair you don’t how the bobbles will be so I kept my eye on it.

“We’ve been doing a lot of work with Dimi (Dmitri Kharine) on playing safe as I like to catch the ball a lot.”

As always Tyler was modest about his contribution and was full of praise for his team-mates.

He continued: “They were only really restricted to two shots so it was pleasing.

“We were always dangerous on the break. We knew we played well first half and they would come at us.

“We should have been two or three goals ahead first half, but we didn’t take our chances and to be fair I thought we played some good stuff on that pitch.

“Second half, the guys in front of us dug in well. We dug in and it’s hard on that pitch.

“We are a footballing team and you can’t really play football on it. It’s not nice.

“We want to play football and we’ve got some great footballers in our side, but if we win 1-0 like that every week I will be happy. We’ve got to keep the pressure on the boys at the top.”

Tyler also asserted the speculation surrounding star man Andy Drury hasn’t affected the players, saying: “At the end of the day we are the footballers. We’ve got to concentrate out there on our performance.

“The transfer window, everyone hears about it. You are going to get speculation for 21 days. We just concentrate on football and let the people above us sort that out. We want Drury with us for the long term.

“Everyone knows how good he is, but if a club comes in for him, a club comes in for him.

“If he stays he stays. We want him to stay as players because he is a great person to have around the team.

“We want him to stay, no question. As a footballer he is outstanding for us week in week out and sets our tempo.

“He has got six days. If he goes he goes and we will cope with it. If he does we’ve got a big enough squad to cope with it.”

On Tyler’s performance, manager Richard Money added: “It’s what he is there for but that’s what you would expect me to say. He is a good keeper and good keepers make match-winning saves when they have to.”
