Yates felt Robins deserved more

Cheltenham Town manager Mark Yates felt his side were deserving of better after they lost their unbeaten run at Kenilworth Road yesterday.

The visitors dominated for long periods of the second half, with Hatters goalkeeper Mark Tyler called into action on more than one occasion, with the Robins attackers also guilty of some wayward finishing.

Yates said: “The disappointment is that we’ve not got anything from the game.

“I thought for the first 25 minutes they were better than us, that they did to us what we do to teams, they won too many first and second balls.

“They paid a massive compliment to us by changing their shape, but we’re going to have to deal with that.

“Second part of the first half we got more chances and got more into the game, and second half I thought we were outstanding. If we’d have got one we would have got a couple, but it just wasn’t to be.

“I won’t fault the lads as long as I get effort like that. We’ve been built on hard work and effort and commitment and I got that for all the game.

“I just thought the first 15-20 minutes we were a bit misguided and we got beaten at what perhaps we do to teams a little bit too often.

“We responded really well and if we get one we get a few. Credit to them, they had something to hang on to and managed to do so. Their keeper has made a few good saves.

“Second half we had chances to win three or four games, it sometimes happens. We pick the wrong option three or four times, we should have been passing to people in good positions, but that’s what happens when you concede a sloppy goal like we did.”

Yates also felt there had been an error from the officials in the build-up to Mark Cullen’s eighth minute winner.

He added: “It was a poor goal on our part. The lads were disappointed the referee gave a throw in to them, they thought it was ours.

“But we still had loads of time to respond and the lads got a free header, we’re playing three centre halves, so we need to look at that.”
