The 21-year-old, who signed for Town in the summer, finished with 16 goals during his first full season at Kenilworth Road, pipping team-mate Cameron McGeehan to the golden boot.

And former Hatter Jake Howells believes he sees a bit of Gray, who scored 57 goals in 111 games for Luton, in Marriott, as he said: “Jack scores goals, whatever he does, he will get a chance.

“In the same sort of way he’s like Andre, he’ll get a chance and he’ll take it, and everyone knows how well Andre’s doing now.

After hearing the glowing comments, Marriott himself said: “That’s a hell of complement.

“He’s a hell of player, he’s got a lot of very, very good attributes and he wouldn’t be at the top of the Champ, just promoted to the Premiership for any other reason.

“Top goalscorer in the Championship, takes some doing, but hopefully, that’s what I strive to get to.

“Everyone has goals, that’s one of mine and that’s very pleasing to here.”

Meanwhile, on Gray, who scored 23 goals as Burnley won the Championship title, Howells added: “I’m so happy from Andre, I’m still good friends with him and I’ve seen him come through from Hinckley to the Premier League now.

“He works so hard, and to get a nine million pound move is frightening, I don’t even want to think of it.

“God knows what he’s earning now, but he deserve every penny, he works hard and hopefully next year he does well and does well in the Prem.”
